Community Support

Our Mission

Building community, restoring hope

When professional coach Ric Wagar experienced a brain injury in 2007, he faced a challenge that would reshape his life’s mission.

Drawing on over 20 years of experience in cognitive development, Wagar pioneered his own recovery program—before neuroplasticity became a household term in rehabilitation circles.

His successful recovery sparked a vision: what worked for him could help others navigate their own brain injury journeys.

This vision became reality in 2014 with the founding of the Vancouver Brain Injury Association (VBIA).

The North Shore Brain Injury Support Group  was the first VBIA program.  NSBISG provided monthly connection and support from January 2015 through March 2020.

When COVID-19 disrupted in-person gatherings, the community adapted.

NSBI Support group meetings moved online, maintaining vital connections through bi-weekly virtual sessions for two years during the pandemic’s most isolating period.

Following VBIA’s closure in March 2022, the North Shore community faced a gap in specialized brain injury services.

Ric Wagar established the North Shore Brain Injury Society in April 2024. This new organization continues the legacy of support, bringing back the cherished North Shore Brain Injury Support Group (NSBISG) meetings and essential recovery services so valuable to brain injury survivors and their families. NSBISG meets at 7 PM the first Tuesday every month at Lions Gate Hospital.

Today, the restored Vancouver Brain Injury Association stands ready to serve our community, building on a decade of experience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to brain injury recovery and support.

Our Mission and Vision

The Vancouver Brain Injury Association is dedicated to empowering people affected by brain injuries. Our mission is to provide brain injury survivors with support groups and recovery services for full participation in the community.

VBIA founded the Concussion Diagnosis Program program.

Since our founding, we have been committed to fostering a supportive environment that encourages healing and growth. Our programs are designed to address the unique challenges faced by brain injury survivors, offering personalized assistance and promoting awareness within the broader community.
